In 2021, the construction of a new laboratory and educational complex for the Electronics, Mechanics and Transport Engineering faculties of Vilnius Tech University began at Plytinės st. 25 in Vilnius. With a total area of over 9000 square meters, this project incorporates modern and environmentally friendly materials, as well as energy-saving engineering systems. The investment for the project amounts to approximately 15.9 million euros and is partially funded by EU investment programs.
Asta Puzinovienė, a constructor at Peikko Lietuva, designed the Peikko constructions used in the project and highlighted the use of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams. The complex was comprised of three parts, with the first part being a 5-story building using 194 DELTABEAM® Composite Beams with a total length of 1.187 km, the second part, a 2-story building using 21 DELTABEAM® beams with a total length of 172.92 m, and the third part, a one-story connecting building, using 2 beams with a total length of 10.24 m.
A.Puzinovienė noted that the most unique aspect of the project was the first part of the building being a true engineering masterpiece, utilizing advanced design concepts to create a structurally sound and visually stunning edifice. The V-shaped columns, designed as the main facade, serve as a backbone for the building, absorbing the axial forces through the use of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams. A node is specially designed to support these columns and handle the forces of the umbrella.
The showcase facade rests on a 12-meter long span, a structure that is particularly sensitive to any deflections. Despite this, the maximum deflection from variable loads was not greater than 10 mm, a testament to the robustness of the design and materials used. The facade elements are supported by cantilever beams, with the longest console reaching 2.2 meters.
The DELTABEAM® Composite Beams are also equipped with special connections, designed to support trusses and reinforced concrete strips, further enhancing the structural stability and durability of the building. These unique features of the first part of the building set it apart from other structures and demonstrate the expertise and innovative thinking of the constructor and Peikko Lietuva.
