Sammontalo, currently under construction in Lappeenranta, is a two-story building that will provide facilities for early childhood education as well as pre-primary and basic education up to 9th grade. In addition to educational premises, the building will also house a library, youth services, and sports facilities.
The design of Sammontalo emphasizes lifecycle management, which is reflected in the selected materials, energy solutions, and biodiversity-supporting measures. The building will be constructed primarily from wood, and its A-class energy rating exceeds the minimum threshold by 20%. Cooling energy will be produced entirely with renewable energy using an air-to-water heat pump.
The project is being implemented as a collaborative construction management contract. The City of Lappeenranta acts as the client, SRV Rakennus Oy is the main contractor, and architectural design is provided by Nervin Arkkitehtuuri Oy. The total gross area of the building is approximately 12,000 m², with a target cost of €44.3 million.
Peikko has supplied the project with 172 pcs DELTABEAM® Green composite beams and 470 pcs ROOCO® column shoes. According to Peikko's Project Manager Elina Hietanen, the composite beams made from over 90% recycled steel have a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional ones, contributing to the project's sustainability goals. In addition, the ROOCO® column shoes enable the use of wooden columns in the hybrid structure.
According to SRV’s Site Manager Karri Behm, collaboration with Peikko went smoothly: “The deliveries during the structural phase were as planned – they arrived on time, and through good cooperation we were able to align the deliveries with the section divisions. No significant deficiencies were found in the delivered products, and the supplier responded quickly to site inquiries and observations,” Behm summarizes.
